Relay for Life is a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate
survivorship and raise money for the American Cancer Society. During the event,
teams of local people will gather at the stadium and take turns walking,
jogging, or running laps. Each team tries to keep at least one team member on
the track at all times. Most teams set up tents, decorate their campsites with a
theme, bring food and have a great time! We'll have entertainment throughout the
event and a DJ on hand all night long. There will be food, kids games, a luminary
ceremony and lots more!
June 13-14 2009 at Lakeshore Park, Lakeshore Drive Celina, OH
Stop and think for just a moment, off the top of your head how many people do
you know who have had cancer or have died from cancer? I'll bet we all can think
of 2 or 3 very easily. Unfortunately, many of us can think of a lot more.
Perhaps someone very close to you has been affected by cancer. Given the
opportunity, wouldn't you do everything you could to help or even eliminate
their pain? That's what Relay is all about--bonding together as a community,
raising funds for research and helping to find a cure for cancer.
Teams are normally made up of 8-15 people. If you are a business owner with just
4 employees, you can invite them and their spouses to join you in forming a
team. Gather the businesses on your block together to form a team, or join
forces with a partnering business (ex: real estate office and a builder).
Churches, youth groups, 4-H clubs, Girl/Boy Scout troops, businesses, service
clubs, and school organizations all make great teams. And remember, teams don't
have to be sponsored by businesses or organizations--many teams are made up
exclusively by family members. Do you have a family member who is fighting or is
a survivor of cancer? What better way to show your support for them than to form
a "family team" for Relay! Many teams are also formed to honor a loved
one who has lost their battle with cancer.
Teams are normally made up of 8-15 people, but any number of team members is
fine.
We will take teams right up until the day of the Relay. HOWEVER, in order to
help us plan for the event we'd like to have your team registered by
April 20 2007.
Our Relay event is an overnight event that provides 18 hours of live family
entertainment -- contests, karaoke, children's games, and more! Teams bring
tents, food, grills, coolers and supplies needed to enjoy the "party with a
purpose!" Relay begins with the Opening Ceremony and Survivors Lap at 6:00
p.m. Friday and continues until the Closing Ceremony at 12 Noon on Saturday.
Each team member is encouraged to raise $100. At first that may seem like a lot
of money, but there are lots of ways to raise your team's donations. Garage
sales, bake sales, and car washes are just a few of the fun ways to raise your
money.
Always feel free to contact any member of the Organizing Committee with any
questions you may have. You may also contact American Cancer Society--Ohio Division at 419-225-8860.
Even if you decide not to form a team, there are definitely other ways you can
support this event. Business owners can become sponsors, individuals can join
the Organizing Committee, or you can support the local fundraisers that will be
going on during the months leading up to Relay. And remember, even if you're not
on a team you are VERY welcome to attend the event--we'll have food,
entertainment, kids games and more--so mark your calendar!
